Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This baseball cap is a fascinating item from the Vietnam War era, specifically from the US Navy's working uniform. It is an excellent example of the caps worn by sailors during this time. We acquired it from a small private museum collection along with an old tag that attributes it to Admiral Samuel Gravely.

Samuel Lee Gravely Jr. was an exceptional officer in the United States Navy. He was known for breaking down barriers and achieving many "firsts" in his career. He paved the way for other African Americans in the Navy and his accomplishments continue to inspire people today.

Gravely was the first African American to serve aboard a fighting ship as an officer. He joined the Navy in 1942 and served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He was an accomplished sailor and was quickly promoted through the ranks.

In 1961, Gravely became the first African American to command a Navy ship, the USS Theodore E. Chandler. He went on to become the first African American fleet commander and the first to become a flag officer. He retired in 1980 as a vice admiral.

Throughout his career, Gravely faced discrimination and prejudice. He was often the only African American in the room, but he persevered and proved his worth time and time again. His legacy is one of bravery, determination, and leadership, and he will always be remembered as a trailblazer in the United States Navy.

A fantastic cap offered in size 7 that comes more than ready for further research and display.

The cap's fantastic condition is a testament to its quality and durability. Despite showing signs of being used for many years, it is still in remarkable shape. All the felt lettering and insignia are still present, and only a few areas exhibit signs of lifting.

This piece of history is a tangible reminder of the brave men and women who served during the Vietnam War, and the sacrifices they made for their country. It's a unique and fascinating piece of military memorabilia that offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in US history.
