Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of the rarely seen U.S. Naval Cutlass, as used from 1860-1865. The boarding cutlass was derived from the French pattern of 1833, often referred to as a “cullere a pot,” or more commonly called the “soup ladle” weapon. It features all brass mounts, leather-wrapped sword grip, and a nice riveted leather scabbard. These scabbards were riveted instead of stitched, as saltwater destroys stitching very quickly.

The curved 26 inch blade's ricasso is marked on one side with the banner style address, which is extremely faded and only visible from a certain angle:

One the other side it is marked with:

The leather blade buffer is still intact, which we never see on these! The blade is in good shape, however it has moderate pitting and oxidation towards the tip. The serial number 10M/506 is stamped under the crossguard, for 10,506. The side of the pommel cap is stamped 16, likely a rack number aboard a ship.

The leather-wrapped grip shows some areas of material loss, but it is still mostly solid.

The included leather scabbard is in heavily worn but solid condition with 38 of the 39 rivets still intact, and due to leather shrinkage the tip of the blade has broken through the end of the scabbard, which happens to most examples. Additionally, there is very heavy crazing and cracking to the leather with one of the rivets missing near the end. The frog button on this example is intact, very rare to see. There are no breaks but there are areas of weakness.

A fantastic M1860 Naval Cutlass with a genuine riveted scabbard. Ready for further research and display.
