Original Item: Only One Available. Here is a handsome Civil War specimen of the Model 1858 Smooth Side or Flat Back pattern tin canteen offered in good condition. This example has a great early war skyblue cover which is often attributed to the New York Depot.

The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Canteen measures approximately 7 3/4" in diameter. It is covered in skyblue wool. The cover is complete and in good condition with typical stains, small holes and wear, but overall solid. The tin body of the canteen is excellent, including the spout. There are no markings we can find on the spout.

All three sling loops, the spout, and cork are all present, but the top of the cork and the chain that would retain it is gone. This is a New York Depot canteen as there is a small hole in one of the side strap brackets, which would have had a chain connecting it to the top of the cork stopper. The bottom half of the cork is intact and still inside the spout, but we cannot get it out due to the heavy material loss. The original sling is intact, but it has heavy tearing and looks to have been tired together once broken long ago.
