Original Item. Only One Available. This interesting device was used to hold a slow burning match to ignite the charge in muzzle loading cannon prior to the adoption of friction primers. It is 24” overall and consists of a wooden handle connected at the end with a metal post and a tension nut. The match would be inserted and tensioned into place. On one side is a small metal hook for the belt.
These were used from the 1600s up until the Civil War era, with many being phased out by the Civil War. This example likely dates to the Mexican-American war period.
The portfire holder is in great shape with some heavy wear, but the tension nut still works great.
An outstanding example, only the second we have ever had. Ready for display.
