Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. Brass hilted monster head hangers were in use with the British army from at least the mid-to-late 17th century. Sometimes they are fairly crude cast-brass and some with a little more discernible detail. By the mid-18th century, they seem to be quite similar in form.
This is an extravagant example of an early American monsterhead mounted saber with a faintly engraved blade with the sun on one side, and a very faint depiction of a heavenly arm protruding from the clouds clutching a saber, the first symbol ever used on an American flag (Bedford Flag), carried by Minutemen at the dawn of the Revolution. These are common maker’s markings for swords of the Revolutionary War period. The blade bears two fullers on each side in the middle of the blade.
The grip of this example is correctly all-brass with the ribbed-brass grip still in great condition without any denting, leading to the Monster’s head pommel which is actually a charmingly crude shape with engravings to give it the look of a monster head, a design characteristic that is specifically American in nature. There are even sharp teeth in the mouth which swallows the end of the guard. This is supported by the Stirrup-style guard which is also heavily evident of American manufacture. The guard was given a heavy bend at the end, and is in good shape with some denting and heavy staining.
The 33 3/8” blade is in good condition for its age, with heavy staining and wear, and some small chips in the edge of the blade that are not too noticeable. Both sides of the blade sport two fullers in the center portion. The engravings on both sides are completely evident of the period, but they are now very faint. There is oxidation and pitting towards the tip of the blade, with the pitting getting worse at the very tip.
The hilt is of brass and has held up very well, without any significant damage or denting, just heavy staining. The Monsterhead pommel is very charmingly-detailed and is correct to the period. It is extremely difficult to find these without replacement parts.
One of the most beautiful and well-preserved early American swords we have ever offered, ready for further research and display.
