Original Item. Only One Available. This is an outstandingly-rare piece of ordnance, a Mexican-American War period Mexican bronze mortar shell. Bronze construction is indicative of Mexican Artillery shells of this era. The shell weighs 5.6 pounds, and is roughly 5 ½” in diameter.
We checked the interior of the round, and there looks to be the original wooden plug sitting around some packing peanuts. The wooden plug could certainly be removed and wedged into the hole for display, a great opportunity.
The bottom of the round is inscribed:
SPANISH
Fort Micheaocan (Michoacán?)
Mexico
We couldn’t find any reference to a fort at Michoacán, but there is more research to be done. The round is in rough shape with heavy scuffing and wear to the oxidized finish. There is heavy tape residue across it that could be removed with some work. The hole has some wood fragments stuck to the sides showing that the wooden plug used to be there.
A fantastic example, ready for display.
