Original Mexican-American War Era Mexican Hand Forged “Machete Sword” With Coin Ricasso “Buffers”

Regular price $795.00

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a great example of a Mexican-American War era Mexican hand-forged sword. The sword itself has a unique addition added to it. On both sides of the ricasso, there is a small coin on each side, almost acting as a “buffer” to keep the blade tight to the guard. As this was a hand forged sword, most likely done by a local blacksmith, there are no markings that we could find.

The design is a typical heavy curved saber of the time, with a 29 ½” curved single edged un-fullered blade, and a 3 bar basket hilt. The guard is of steel, while the grip is bone/ivory. Condition of the hilt is good, with the expected patination from age and use. Unfortunately the handle is stained and cracked in multiple places, causing expansion and ultimately a loose feel on the tang.

The steel blade has a heavy oxidized patina, with heavy surface rust, pitting and nicks in the edge. The edge has a few minor dents, but no significant ones. There is wear, especially near the transition from the ricasso.

Overall this is a wonderful locally made Mexican Sword with great research potential! Comes more than ready for further research and display.
