Item Description

Original Items: Only One Lot Available. Both war and medicine alter the human body, but in two different ways; war uses violence to harm and kill, while medicine strives to save and maintain the body. Despite this essential disparity, the two fields have been intimately connected and mutually contributive since early in history. This connection reached new heights during the “Modern era,” as war expanded and became increasingly medicalized.

This Japanese medic’s satchel comes complete with contents and “as found” in Bougainville, New Guinea. The contents range from a Field Surgeon’s Kit to a Medic’s armband and a set of glasses. The Field Surgeon’s kit has a small tag inside reading:

Bougainville

This denotes that the set was found at Kahili Airfield in Bougainville, New Guinea.

The Items In This Lot:
- Leather Satchel: The satchel retains original Kanji stamping into the leather on the underside of the top flap, but it is faint. The bag appears to be complete and is without any extensive damage. The carrying strap is retained but has heavy crazing and oxidation to the buckle.

The following items is what was found inside of the satchel:
- Japanese field surgical kit with some contents showing rusting and wear with a small cotton ball. Roughly 12-13 tools inside. Heavy verdigris on exterior. It comes with a thin instruction sheet which has an intentional break in the middle, we are unsure of the purpose of this piece.

- Japanese Medic’s Red Cross armband with Kanji writing around the cross. It is stitched together at the back and is very worn. Great example.

- Japanese medical thermometer in small leather case, excellent.

- Very small leather pouch with depiction of woman on back. Snap is broken and pouch is empty.

- Small piece of leather 3 ¼ x 5 ¼”.

- Set of very small bifocals in original leather sleeve.
