Original Item. Only One Available. The Order of the Crown of Italy was founded as a national order in 1868 by King Vittorio Emanuele II, to commemorate the unification of Italy in 1861. It was awarded in five degrees for civilian and military merit. Today the Order of the Crown has been replaced by the Order of Merit of Savoy and is still conferred on new knights by the current disputed head of the house, Emanuele Filiberto, Prince of Venice.
The order has been suppressed by law since the foundation of the Republic in 1946. However, Umberto II did not abdicate his position as fons honorum and it remained under his Grand Mastership as a dynastic order. While the continued use of those decorations conferred prior to 1951 is permitted in Italy, the crowns on the ribbons issued before 1946 must be substituted for as many five pointed stars on military uniforms.
This is an outstanding WWI era issue Order of the Crown of Italy medal set, including the neck order and the star to be worn on the left chest, denoting the Class of Grand Officer. The neck order is in great condition with the ribbon retaining its colors well. The black string which connects around the neck is in good order with some tearing. There is a museum catalog tag on the back of the ribbon, reading 1964.9.4a.
The star is in outstanding condition with a Sterling construction showing tarnishing to the back. There is a maker’s logo around the Coat of Savoy, reading E. GARDINO SUCC. CRAVANZOLA - ROMA. The enamel is very well-retained on both the neck order and star.
The case that houses the medal set is not original to the medals, but it is a period Italian medal case by the same maker as the star, Cravanzola. The case measures 4 ¼ x 9 ¾ x 1 ½”.
An outstanding medal set, ready for further research and display!
