Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is an excellent well-worn named Scarlet Officer's Dress Tunic, identified to Captain Francis Gilfrid Maughan, who was commissioned in 1897 as a Second Lieutenant in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion Durham Light Infantry, before he became a regular and joined 2 DLI in India. When the Great War began, he joined the 18th Brigade, as a Staff Captain, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in 1916. He was severely wounded in September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, and after his recovery, spent the rest of the war with Northern Command in York. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre with Palm by France. He retired in 1923 and died in 1938 at Tonbridge.
The scarlet officer’s uniform bears lovely bullion collar dogs for the Durham Light Infantry with a green backing. The front closure retains 8 great DLI buttons, and the shoulders bear rank for Lieutenant Colonel, with one crown and one pip on each braided cord shoulder boards. Interestingly, Maughan was Breveted a Lieutenant Colonel in 1917. This is a rare occurrence.
On the left breast are five award loops for the attachment of Maughan’s medal bar. We actually found photos of Maughan’s medal bar online, and it is made up of five medals, perfect for these loops. The cuffs retain great officer’s bullion insignia.
The exterior has some light moth tracking in spots, but the interior shows heavy tearing and wear to the lining. Thankfully, the maker’s tag is still retained under the collar, with the name as well:
F.W. FLIGHT 67
MILITARY OUTFITTER
WINCHESTER & ALDERSHOT
Capt. Maughan
The handwritten 67 is likely the size. Despite the damage, this is an outstanding scarlet officer’s uniform well-named to a combat-grizzled veteran of the First World War.
