Original Item: Only One Available. This is a totally original and exceptionally large Imperial German WWI Reichskriegsflagge, or naval war ensign, of the pattern flown by vessels of the Kaiserliche Marine. Measuring approximately 59" tall by 90" long, it is one of the largest Imperial German naval flags we have offered and makes an impressive display piece.

The flag features a large black cross extending across the white field, with the crowned Imperial German eagle enclosed within a white circular medallion at the intersection. The upper hoist canton displays the Imperial black, white, and red colors together with the Prussian Iron Cross.

This general design originated with the North German Confederation and was retained, with several modifications, by the Imperial German Navy. The pattern represented here was introduced in 1903 and remained in service throughout WWI. It is one of the most recognizable and visually striking flags associated with the Kaiserliche Marine.

The flag appears to be constructed from cotton, linen, or a similar period fabric. The exact fiber content has not been tested. The individual design elements are assembled and heavily stitched, with substantial reinforcement visible around the surviving edges.

The original hoist or header is completely missing and appears to have been cut away long ago. Any original size markings, naval stamps, rope, or attachment fittings that may once have been present were removed with it. Although this type of alteration is frequently associated with captured or souvenir flags, there is no documented history confirming when or why the header was removed.

The Reichskriegsflagge served as the naval ensign aboard commissioned vessels throughout the Imperial German fleet. Depending on its assigned size and location aboard ship, an example such as this could have been used on a battleship, battlecruiser, armored or light cruiser, destroyer, torpedo boat, minelayer, submarine, depot ship, transport, or other naval auxiliary. A surviving Imperial German ensign in the collection of Royal Museums Greenwich, for example, is associated with the light cruiser SMS Königsberg.

At approximately 59" by 90", this is a large shipboard-size example that may have been intended for a cruiser, destroyer, auxiliary vessel, or one of the larger ships of the fleet. Naval vessels carried ensigns in different dimensions for varying weather conditions, ceremonial use, and different positions aboard ship, however, so size alone cannot conclusively identify the class of vessel from which it came. The loss of the marked hoist makes a more precise attribution impossible.

Condition is good overall, with moderate age wear, staining, discoloration, creasing, and scattered fabric deterioration. The edges show extensive stitching reinforcement. The missing header is the most significant condition issue and is fully visible in the accompanying photographs.

Despite the loss of the hoist, the flag retains its complete central eagle, large cross, Iron Cross canton, and strong overall visual presence. Its impressive dimensions, honest age, and unmistakable Imperial German naval design make it an excellent centerpiece for a WWI, Kaiserliche Marine, or historic flag collection.
