Original Item. Only One Available. This is an outstanding display piece, an Imperial German Pre-WWI bronze statue of an officer serving with the Prussian 27. Infanterie-Regiment. We can tell that this depicts a soldier during the late 19th century for a few reasons, including his holding the Gewehr 1888 Commission Rifle and the M1871 Sword bayonet on his belt. The statue measures 10 ¾” tall and has a base measuring 2 ⅞ x 2 ⅞ x ⅝”.
The officer wears an earlier style Pickelhaube, possibly a Model 1871 given that there is only a cockade on one side. Both his shoulder boards have gothic numbers 27, for the 27th Regiment. The bottom part of his Gewehr 88 Commission Rifle is a bit loose on its screw, so it rotates a bit, but does not move from its spot. He has the correct Tornister to his back with an attached blanket, mess kit, with his canteen and shovel attached at the back of his belt, with an M1871 sword bayonet over the shovel as is correct.
The base of the statue has a foundry mark reading:
R. BELLAIR & CO.
BERLIN
FRIEDRICHSTR. 182
The company was ' R. Bellair & Co.' of 182 Friedrich Street in Berlin. They were known for producing or supplying works of art, especially bronze figurines, during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. This small identifying circle was usually attached to their goods.
