Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of the Model 1849 Faschinenmesser Artillery Short Sword, with a brass hilt and the characteristic "S" cross guard. The name itself translates to "Fascine Knife", and the design is intended both for defense an as a tool for cutting "fascines". These are bundles of sticks and brush used to strengthen trenches, walking paths, and other types of earthen work found on the battlefield, especially around artillery emplacements. This example has good unit markings and comes in its original scabbard.
The short sword is in good condition, with the expected wear from age and use. The slightly curved steel blade does show some use, and has areas of heavy spotted oxidation and staining, with some material loss on the blade in spots where oxidation is heavy. The main edge is still quite sharp, and it is marked on the rear of the blade with (Crown) / W / 97, indicating acceptance in 1897 during the reign of German Emperor Wilhelm II. The hilt shows heavy loss of finish and staining.

This denotes manufacture by Friedrich August Hermes of Solingen. Both the crossguard and scabbard are stamped 1.M.26.R.69., denoting use by a Bavarian Artillery School!
The original brass-mounted leather scabbard is in great shape without any serious deformation.
