Original German WWII SS Identity Disc Dog Tag - 1st Waffen Gebirgsjäger Mountain Infantry Regiment - No. 703

Item Description

Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This is a genuine German WWII SS identity disc (aka; Dog Tag) Erkennungsmarke, used to identify soldiers in the field. These were made of plated steel, aluminum, or zinc, and were designed so that if a soldier died, the bottom half of the tag would be broken off, while the other half remained with their body.

This example is made of stamped zinc and is in very good well patinated condition. It is marked as follows on both sides, which is a bit faint in areas due to oxidation:

703
2. / SS-GEB. JAG. RGT. 1

This soldier was a member (No. 703) of the 1st Waffen Gebirgsjäger (Mountain Infantry) Regiment of the SS, 2nd Battalion. We did some preliminary research, and unfortunately there is not much information regarding the Mountain Infantry units of the Waffen SS. Most that were able to find were part of the foreign volunteer divisions, so we leave this as an excellent research opportunity.
