Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a very interesting piece, a memorial shrine/plaque made to commemorate the life and service of Obergefreiter Erwin Metz, who was killed in action in Cherbourg on June 13th, 1944, during the Battle of Cherbourg which was part of the Battle of Normandy. The piece is meant to hang on the wall and measures 13 ¼ x 14 ¾”. The shrine has a photo of Metz behind a piece of glass.
The bottom of the shrine retains markings in white paint reading:
Obgfr.
Erwin Metz
geboren am 17. Okt. 1922 i. Gſchwend
gef. am 13. Juni 1944 i. d. felz
Cherbourg
Obergefreiter
Erwin Metz
born on October 17, 1922 in Gschwend
killed in action on June 13, 1944 near
Cherbourg
We could not find any information on Metz, but given his common name this is to be expected. There is heavy wear across the piece and the paint is very worn. There is also what looks to be water damage to the photo.
A fantastic piece honoring a Killed in Action German soldier. Ready for further research and display.
