  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is an especially attractive original Imperial German WWI M1898/05 n/A Seitengewehr, commonly known among collectors as the “Butcher” bayonet, manufactured by Carl Eickhorn of Solingen and dated 1917. Intended for use with the German 8mm Gewehr 98 rifle system, the M1898/05 is immediately recognizable by its broad, heavy blade with a pronounced swelling toward the point. This example retains its original grooved wood grip scales, steel scabbard, and brown leather belt frog.

This example has a very nice set of original grooved wood grips, and the hilt finish is well-retained. The blade is in overall great condition with some sharpening along the edge and some minor oxidation spotting. The blade ricasso is maker marked:

    CARL EICKHORN
    SOLINGEN

Per J. Anthony Carter's book GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS, this specific version of the mark was used on swords, "walking out" bayonets, and other similar items after 1906. This is exactly the mark that should be on a WWI Blade. This company was founded in 1865 by Carl Eickhorn, and is arguably the most famous of all Solingen makers. Not only could the family trace their history back 500 years, but they could also demonstrate involvement in the hardening and grinding industries for the same period. Truly the nobility of Solingen Edged weapon dynasties. Eickhorn edged weapons are the most desirable of all makers.

The steel scabbard is in good condition, with some moderate dents on the sides, and some minor rusting in spots. The original blued finish has worn in most places to brown, typical of a 100 year old scabbard. The brown leather frog shows heavy crazing and some cracking of the material around the frog button.

This example is particularly noteworthy for its 1917 date, Carl Eickhorn Solingen maker marking, correct M1898/05 n/A configuration, original grooved wooden grips, steel wartime scabbard, and surviving leather belt frog. Together these features make it a well-preserved example of one of the most recognizable German bayonet patterns of the First World War.
