  • Original Item. Only One Available. Germania is the personification of the German nation or the Germans as a whole. Like many other national personification symbols, she appeared first during the Roman Era. During the Medieval era, she was usually portrayed as one of the lands or provinces ruled by the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, and not as the most prominent but in a subordinate position to imperial power and other provinces. Around 1500, together with the birth of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, Emperor Maximilian I and his humanists reinvented her as Mother of the Nation. She is also commonly associated with the Romantic Era and the Revolutions of 1848, though the figure was later used by Imperial Germany.

This is an outstanding ceramic statue dating to the First World War era, or even possibly into the late 19th century. The statue, measuring roughly 20 ¼” tall, depicts Germania wearing a Crown similar to the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire. She clutches a dagger in her right hand, which appears to have been broken off in the past, and it is a bit loose now. It might need to be reattached again at one point. In her left hand is the shield bearing the Coat of arms of Germany.

The base of the statue measures roughly 6 ¾ x 5 ¾”. There is some minor damage and staining across the statue, but it has held up very well overall. The dagger’s breakage appears to be the only serious damage. The underside shows a stamped number, 726 / 6, likely a model number for whatever company produced this.

A really tremendous statue that will fit into any collection focused around Germany during any period. Ready for display!
