Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a lovely German WWII period photo album used by a soldier serving in the RAD and later the Luftwaffe. There are 38 photographs total, with most being taken in the field and during training, with many photos of military units, men relaxing, and some sight-seeing. The album measures about 6 ¾ x 10” and is 25 pages but there are only photos on the first 6, one of which is an added page. The album has the spiderweb onionskin dividers in good shape.
The album has some good captions showing that he was in RAD from April to October 1938, then photos of him and others doing sports, and later him at an airfield with flight equipment. One photo shows a rigid airship in the distance and is labeled Z.L. Hindenburg, though it is likely not THAT Hindenburg as that had its accident in 1937.
The final photos appear to show them using searchlights, and another shot of them with a crashed Mercedes tractor in a field. One attached photo shows an officer wearing medals and three young German boys reading a book.
This German WWII-period photo album preserves a coherent sequence of 38 photographs tracing its owner’s service from the RAD in 1938 into later Luftwaffe training and airfield duty. The dated captions, military group scenes, sporting activities, flight equipment, searchlight work, and field photographs provide useful context for further identification and research. Although only the first six pages contain photographs, the surviving images appear to have been assembled during the owner’s service rather than added later. The album remains in good overall condition, with its spiderweb-pattern tissue dividers largely intact.
Historical records like this album have become priceless time capsules that provide an incomparable level of insight into the individual experience of the Second
World War, now that almost eighty years have passed.
The older albums such as these usually withstand the ravages of time. The leather or fabric covers may wear, but the pages stay well intact. The black paper albums of the early 20th century are more fragile, while the glue from magnetic albums can damage photographs. And, as with all old photographs, keep albums in a safe, climate controlled environment
