Original Item: One-of-a-Kind Set. This is an interesting original French République Française civic flag display consisting of a painted RF flag-holder panel together with three period French tricolor flags mounted on wooden poles. The arrangement was almost certainly intended for patriotic, civic, commercial, or institutional display, though we have been unable to determine its exact original setting. The upper fitting associated with the sign is now missing, so the flags can no longer be positioned in the holder as originally intended.
The sign measures roughly 13” long and 9 ¼” wide, with the front painted with the French flag colors and RF in the middle in gold. The sign has some heavy cracking and wear, and is missing the top fitting on the back, so this set cannot display as intended.
One of the flags has a small handwritten tag around the pole reading BUNS TABAC. Each flag pole measures roughly 35” long and one retains the cute faux pole topper with an RF in the center, and another retains the bottom half of one of these pole toppers as the spike broke off. The third pole has no topper.
Each of the three flags is a multi-piece construction with each color a separate piece. They each measure roughly 15 ¾ x 22 ½”.
Taken together, the painted République Française panel, matching tricolor flags, surviving RF finial, and period pole construction strongly indicate that this set was intended as a coordinated French civic or patriotic display during the early 20th century. Although the loss of the upper mounting fitting prevents the arrangement from being assembled exactly as originally intended, the surviving components retain substantial historical and decorative interest as an unusually complete period display.
