  • Original Items: Only One Set Available. This is a very interesting and scarce Cold War era PPN-2 active infrared night vision scope set, believed to be a Polish issue example of the Soviet designed system. It is complete with its carrying case, chest rig, infrared spotlight assembly, and screwdriver. The external battery housing is present but empty, and no batteries are included.

The designation ППН-2, transliterated as PPN-2, is an abbreviation of the Russian Pulemyotnyy Pritsel Nochnoy, meaning “Machine Gun Night Sight.” The PPN-2 was designed for use with the Degtyaryov RP-46 light machine gun, Gorjunov SG-43 and SGM machine guns, and the B-10 recoilless rifle. Soviet technical literature identifies these weapons and lists the infrared spotlight, voltage converter, and battery equipment as principal components of the system.

The PPN-2 was an active infrared system. Rather than amplifying ambient light like later passive night vision equipment, it used an infrared spotlight to illuminate the target area. The scope’s electro optical components converted the reflected infrared light into an image visible through the eyepiece.

This system is approximately one and a half times larger and heavier than the contemporary NSP-2 night vision scope intended for use with Kalashnikov rifles and RPD light machine guns. Its considerably larger construction reflects its intended use with crew served machine guns and the B-10 recoilless rifle.

Although Soviet designed, the PPN-2 was also used and supported by other Warsaw Pact nations. A Polish Ministry of National Defense parts catalogue published in 1966 documented the PPN-2 using licensed technical documentation, supporting its use within the Polish military system.

The set consists of the large, heavyweight scope in its original carrying case with an accompanying screwdriver. Also included is the infrared spotlight assembly, empty external battery housing, associated heavy wiring, and chest rig. The battery housing secures to the rig, while the heavy cable connects the power assembly to the spotlight. The spotlight retains its protective cover, which pulls down to expose the lens for operation.

The scope measures approximately 11¼" × 7" × 5½" and retains its original data plate marked:

    ППН-2
    № РО 4859

The included components appear physically intact, and the set may be a candidate for restoration. However, the battery cells are not present, the equipment has not been tested, and we cannot guarantee that any electrical or optical components function. It should be considered an untested historical display and restoration item.

A substantial example of early Cold War active infrared technology, particularly impressive when displayed with its large scope, spotlight assembly, original carrying case, and chest rig.
