  • Original Items. Only One Lot Available. This is a very appealing group of four Canadian military badges dating from the Second Boer War era, consisting of three larger cap badges and one smaller collar badge. All four use the distinctly Canadian maple leaf design surmounted by the Imperial Crown and incorporating the word CANADA, a pattern closely associated with Canadian troops serving during the South African War of 1899-1902. The Canadian War Museum specifically records that members of the 2nd (Special Service) Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment of Infantry wore a maple leaf badge surmounted by the Imperial Crown and bearing CANADA on their cork helmets, with smaller versions worn on the collar.

Canada's participation in the South African War marked an important early overseas deployment for the young Dominion. The decision to send troops was politically divisive. Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier faced strong pressure for participation from many English Canadians while significant opposition came from French Canadians, creating a difficult political compromise. Laurier ultimately authorized a volunteer contingent, and over the course of the war more than 7,000 Canadians served in South Africa.

The maple leaf had already become an important Canadian national emblem by this period, and its use by Canadian soldiers in South Africa was especially visible. Canadian Heritage specifically notes that Canadian troops fighting in the Boer War from 1899-1902 wore maple leaf badges on their helmets.

The three large size (2¼ x 2⅜”) cap badges depict the maple leaf under a Crown over CANADA. They are in varying degrees of condition with one showing as plain brass/bronze while the other two show some darkening from verdigris and wear. There is bending to the stems of the maple leaf with the plain brass example now missing the stem. There is also bending to one of the loops on one.

The smaller size (1 x 1⅛”) collar badge has some bending at the tip of the maple leaf but it retains its pin on the back for affixing it to the uniform.

Material connected with Canada's South African War service has considerable historical interest because the conflict represented one of Canada's first significant overseas military commitments. These four badges retain the bold maple leaf, Imperial Crown, and CANADA identity that made Canadian insignia of the period immediately recognizable. Despite the verdigris, bending, missing stem, and other honest age related wear, this is a strong matching group for a collection devoted to the Boer War, early Canadian military insignia, the Royal Canadian Regiment, or the development of distinctly Canadian military identity at the beginning of the 20th century.
