Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice standard British WWI P-1907 bayonet, which is marked EFD on the ricasso for RSAF Enfield. Above this is the correct 1907, for a Pattern 1907 bayonet made during the reign of King George V, who reigned 1910 - 1936. This is marked together with all the usual acceptance marks and proofs, of which there are . The bayonet is also stamped with what looks like ‘15, indicating manufacture in 1915. The bayonet comes in its scabbard which is standard with the teardrop frog button.
The bayonet measures approximately 21 ¾ inches overall and has a 17-inch single-edged blade with fuller. The crossguard measures approximately 2 ½ inches wide. The blade and metal components show moderate service wear consistent with age, while the wooden grip scales remain in good condition with moderate handling wear. The pommel locking button remains functional and operates properly.
The wood grips are in good condition and have moderate wear to the wood. The scabbard is in fair condition with heavy wear to the leather. The steel on both ends are undamaged but slightly oxidized. The locking button works fine and there is moderate wear overall.
The Pattern 1907 bayonet was developed for the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield rifle, particularly the No. 1 Mk III family. It replaced the shorter Pattern 1903 bayonet after the adoption of the more compact SMLE rifle created concern that the combination of a shorter rifle and short bayonet did not provide sufficient reach compared with contemporary service rifles.
To address this, the Pattern 1907 was given a substantially longer 17-inch blade. Early examples were manufactured with a hooked quillon on the crossguard, but this feature was eliminated during WWI as unnecessary and as an added complication in wartime manufacture. Later Pattern 1907 bayonets, including examples from the main wartime production period, therefore generally have the simplified straight guard configuration seen here.
Unlike the earlier Pattern 1903, the Pattern 1907 employed a single-edged blade of heavier construction and became one of the most recognizable British bayonet patterns of the First World War. It remained closely associated with the SMLE and continued in service well beyond the end of WWI.
The combination of the clear EFD Enfield marking, apparent 1915 date, surviving inspection and acceptance stamps, functional locking mechanism, original wooden grips, and accompanying leather scabbard makes this a strong representative example of the standard British service bayonet of WWI.
