  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is a lovely Royal Navy midshipman’s dirk manufactured by J. Gieve & Sons Portsmouth around 1901-1905. The 18” blade is double-etched with the cypher of King Edward VII on one side, who reigned from 1901 to 1910.

The gilt brass hilt with acorn quillons to the recurving crossguard, with fouled anchor langet, wire bound rayskin grip and lion head pommel with long mane backstrap has aged very well. There is some loss to the rayskin grip but nothing major. The gilt is well-retained in the recesses, and the naval badge rain chape is in good order. The blade has a great patina with the etchings still in great order. The overall length of the dirk is 23 ½”.

The brass-mounted leather scabbard is in good order but there is a heavy bend in the leather near the drag. The throat is engraved with the initials of the owner, D.B.C. The scabbard measures roughly 18” not counting the locking bar to keep the dirk in its scabbard in a naval environment. The throat of the scabbard is stamped 28.

This is a very nice Midshipman’s dirk, ready for display.
