Original Items: Only One Lot Available. This is an attractive Australian WWII khaki tropical uniform and insignia lot consisting of a named shirt, separately named trousers, medals, rank insignia, Australia shoulder titles, and additional uniform accessories.
The lightweight khaki clothing is representative of the uniforms worn by Australian forces in the Middle East, North Africa, the Mediterranean, and other warm-weather theaters during WWII.
The shirt and trousers are named to two different Australian servicemen and should therefore be considered separate period pieces assembled together as a representative uniform lot rather than a single identified grouping.
The khaki shirt has two pleated breast pockets and is named beneath the collar:
J.E. HURST
9X43149
The service number provides an excellent starting point for further research into Hurst’s wartime service.
The accompanying khaki trousers bear the Australian Department of Defence acceptance marking:
D
(BROAD ARROW)
D
They are additionally named:
CLIVE GRIFFIN
The Australian broad arrow marking confirms government ownership and military issue. Griffin’s full name also offers a promising avenue for identifying his unit and service history.
The insignia and medal lot includes:
Africa Star
Victory Medal
Sergeant rank chevron armbands
Corporal rank insignia
AUSTRALIA shoulder titles
Colored “E” formation or unit patch with four stripes
Small uniform cord
The Africa Star was awarded for qualifying operational service in North Africa between June 1940 and May 1943. Australian troops played a major role in the desert campaigns, including the defense of Tobruk and fighting at El Alamein, before many units were later redeployed to confront Japan in the Pacific.
The included rank insignia and shoulder titles allow the uniform to be arranged into an especially effective representative display of an Australian soldier serving in a tropical or desert theater.
The exact association of the loose medals and insignia with either Hurst or Griffin has not been established. They are included as found and should be researched individually rather than assumed to belong to either named serviceman.
Named Australian tropical uniforms are considerably less commonly encountered than standard British or American WWII clothing. The combination of two researchable names, government acceptance markings, period medals, rank insignia, and Australia shoulder titles gives this lot excellent visual appeal and historical potential.
A compelling Australian WWII uniform ensemble representing the Commonwealth forces that fought from the deserts of North Africa to the jungles and islands of the Pacific.
