  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is an interesting knife, Bulgaria’s variation of the famous German HJ knife, the first we have ever offered. The blade is etched with the Bulgarian equivalent of “Blood and Honour”, and is maker-marked on the reverse to Robert Klaas of Solingen. The scabbard is retained, but the leather belt loop and securing strap is heavily torn and is very close to falling off.

The 4½” blade is missing the very tip, and is marked on one side with the trademark logo that reads ROBERT KLAAS / SOLINGEN over and under the trademark Klaas "Kissing Storks" trademark emblem. Robert Klaas, Feine Solingen Stahlwaren (Fine Solingen Steelware), is a well-known maker from Solingen, the famous "City of Blades" in Western Germany, which produced many fine edged weapons. The company was originally founded by Friedrich Robert Klaas, who married the daughter of knife maker Peter Daniel Pauls. After his father-in-law passed away, all was left to Klaas and his wife, so he merged his scissor business with the knife business, and registered with Solingen authorities in 1869. The company passed to his sons, and then his son-in-law. It survived WWI, WWII, and still exists today, per J. Anthony Carter's fine work GERMAN SWORD AND KNIFE MAKERS.

The grip is missing the small shield device that would be attached. The crossguard is stamped 392, possibly a serial number. The overall length of the knife is 8”.

The scabbard is also similar to those used with HJ knives and has a leather belt loop & securing strap. The leather belt loop is nearly entirely disconnected and has extremely heavy wear. There is a break in one of the straps as shown and there are other spots where a break is likely to occur soon.

A scarce knife, the first we have ever offered. Ready for further research and display.
