Original WWI French Model 1870 Enlisted Trooper’s Cuirassier Helmet with Horsehair Tail

Regular price $1,895.00

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. A fine example of a WWI period Model 1870 French Cuirassier Enlisted Trooper’s Helmet. The helmet is comprised of a steel body with brass fittings, black horsehair tail, red horsehair tuft on marmouset. The original leather lining is intact, but shows signs of heavy wear from honest use and storage over the decades.

The Helmet features a Tall Brass Cimier with the "Medusa head" emblem to the front. Period Black horse mane on top and back of the helmet. Red horse hair "Marmouset" on the front of the cimier. The Helmet "bandeau" is the French Grenade surrounded by laurel leaves. Both original chinscales remain somewhat attached to the helmet by the standard bayonet type fixation though the left side is no longer secured properly. The front leather tab is missing for the buckle and it is now wire tied together.

The helmet is most likely from the First World War. The helmet does exhibit some slight wear to the exterior, with browned oxidation throughout on the exterior. The brass fittings have mellowed to a very pleasing patinated coloration as well. It is however a good looking helmet and is complete and original in every area apart from the feather plume which is missing. Portions of the visor trim are protruding a little, so there will me minor gaps present.

Whether it be from the Franco/Prussian War of 1870-71 period or the Great War of 1914/1918. Ready for display!
