Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Just acquired at a recent military show! This is a lovely Imperial German WWI Era Hanger or Short sword, as was often used during hunting, or possibly as a close combat weapon. In form it has a full-sized brass hilt with a "P" guard, and only the blade and scabbard are smaller than normal. The brass hilt is a "Dove Head" style, and has a lovely shark skin over wood grip, bound with three pairs of twisted brass wire, with the center pair thicker than the others. The hilt is solid on the grip, with just a bit of looseness in the wrapping. The cross guard is stamped with the number 1176.
The 17 3/4" long carbon steel blade is a bit like a long knife, single-edged with a fuller near the spine, and has not been sharpened, though it does show some nicks on the edge. It also some some scuffing from use and cleaning, but really does look nice. There are no adornments or other designs on it.
The reverse ricasso is stamped with a dual arc address marking reading HAST & UHTHOFF / DRESDEN., indicating production ty Hast & Uhthoff, Königlich Hoflieferant (Royal Purveyor to the Court), located in Dresden, then capital of the Kingdom of Saxony. Founded in 1815, this manufacturer of gold and silverware was a purveyor to the Royal Court of Saxony. They supplied swords and other weapons to the officers of the Royal Army, however these were almost always acquired in Solingen and remarked. The company was one of the few royal purveyors to survive in the Weimar period, and finally closed its doors in 1945. For more information please see J. The brass fit leather scabbard is typical for the time period, and is in very good condition, with a lovely patina on the brass. The leather does show chipping and flaking of the black finish, and the stitching is still intact.
