Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fantastic example on just how resourceful the individual can be during combat. We unfortunately do not know the actual history of this converted fighting knife, but it is our belief that an American soldier either purchased or “found” this bayonet and cut it down.

The bayonet itself appears to be dated 1878 on the spine, but due to how worn the markings are it is very difficult to read. There is an arsenal marking on the spine as well, but this is also too faded to be able to read properly. The fighting knife itself is in lovely condition and does show signs of wear and use. The bayonet mechanics themselves were removed by the soldier, more than likely to give it a slimmer profile and to help mitigate the risk of snagging it on clothing. The brass handle has a lovely aged mustard patina as well as verdigris buildup. It appears as if the soldier tried to flatten out some of the grooves on the handle due to the amount of “strike” marks present.

The included leather scabbard has the appearance of having been made for another knife of sorts and was just recycled into use as they so ofter were. It is in lovely condition with all stitching and rivets intact. The retaining strap on the belt loop is in slid condition and still has a functioning button. The front of the scabbard has the last name “LAMOUTTE” scratched into it. Given how this is a French last name, this could have also been a family item passed down and was converted before the soldier left for the war, but your guess is as good as ours!

This is a wonderful bayonet converted fighting knife and that has great potential for research. Comes more than ready for display.
