Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. A wonderful poster aimed at recruiting men with mechanical skills to join the fledgling Aviation Section of the Signal Corps, the forerunner of the Army Air Service. Among other skilled workers the poster lists a need for "Chauffeurs", "Armorers (Machine Gun Repair Men)", "Propeller Makers", and "Buglers".

The Aviation Section, Signal Corps, was the aerial warfare service of the United States from 1914 to 1918, and a direct statutory ancestor of the United States Air Force. It absorbed and replaced the Aeronautical Division, Signal Corps, and conducted the activities of Army aviation until its statutory responsibilities were suspended by President Woodrow Wilson in 1918. The Aviation Section organized the first squadrons of the aviation arm and conducted the first military operations by United States aviation on foreign soil.

This 1917 U.S. Army Signal Corps Aviation Section recruiting poster offers opportunity for enlistment prior to a deadline (“Dec 13), featuring a large red arrow and small photographs of airplanes. The poster features openings for dozens of Aviation/Signal Corps related jobs such as Metal Workers, Barbers, Propeller Makers, Telephone Adjusters and more.

The overall condition is quite nice with great colors and details. The level of wear present is that of an object that is well over 100 years old. There is moderate age toning, tearing to the edges and visible creases with minor separation in areas.

A lovely poster that comes more than ready for further research and display.
