Original Spanish 11mm Pinfire Double Barrel Pistol by Francisco Arizaga of Eibar with Hidden Triggers - circa 1870

Regular price $495.00

Item Description

Original item. Only One Available. This is a very nice French style double barrel pinfire pistol, which in this case was made in the 1870s in Eibar, a major gunmaking region of Spain. The "NEW" French "Pinfire" cartridge had been recently introduced, which featured a pin extending from the rear side of the cartridge that when depressed discharged the round. Never as popular as might have been expected and by the late 1870s quite obsolete.

The strap between the barrels is marked with the Spanish maker of this pistol:

F/ᵒ ARIZAGA EIBAR

Francisco Arizaga is a known maker from Eibar in Spain, who worked from 1870 to 1885. We have seen other similar examples of pinfire pistols by Arizaga, as well as clones of late 19th Century American firearms.

This example is fitted with a very nice fluted wood grip with a steel butt cap, and is 9 1/4" in overall length with 4 5/8" barrels. There is a bolster for a lanyard ring as well, however the ring itself is missing, probably having fallen off long ago. The bolster does not swivel, and you can unscrew it from the grip. allowing the butt plate to be removed. The iron frame has some very simple engraving and is now bright steel, and it features two side by side rifled barrels of about 11mm caliber.

Both hammers function, and at full cock the “hidden” triggers fold out, allowing firing. After this the triggers correctly lock back closed. Pushing the left side release button allows the barrel to tip up, putting the two pinfire chambers into the reloading position. The right side has a functional half cock position, while the left does not, which makes it hard to open the breech except when both hammers are at full cock. There is no sight of any type, indicating this was intended for close range use.

Condition is good, though it definitely shows quite a bit of wear and cleaning over the years. The exterior is bright steel, with areas of past pitting now cleaned away. The grip is in good shape, though there is some cracking near the frame, and there is a repair on the right side.

Ideal for any overcoat or uniform pocket, in working order and nice matured condition. A great example of a Spanish double barrel pinfire pistol.
