Original Late 18th Century Spanish Model 1753 Flintlock Dragoon Cavalry Pistol - Dated 1784

Regular price $2,395.00

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very rare and most impressive Spanish Flintlock Dragoon Pistol, only the third that we have ever had! The Spanish Regulation Model 1873 pistol is a design that saw extensive service on both land and sea in the Seven Years’ War and American and French Revolutionary Wars. It is substantially constructed with lovely all brass mountings, including a lovely long eared butt cap. These usually would have a crown-topped shield escutcheon on the back of the grip, however in this case it is missing, with the inlet still present. The flint lock has characteristic "flat" jaws on the hammer, a holdover from the Miquelet locks used previously.

The stock shows some lovely carving around all of the fittings, making it quite lovely. There is a date of 1784 on the lock plate and the top facet of the barrel nocks form, with what looks to be EX G on the left side, and a faded marking on the right facet. There is a rectangular marking on the lock plate tail, which has some letters inside, however we were unable to read all of them. We have seen other examples of these pistols with a variety of different rectangular stamps. Definitely some great research potential in this pistol!

The pistol has an overall length of 19 inches, and is fitted with a 11 3/4 inch smoothbore barrel with a caliber of approximately .70". There is a wooden ramrod under the barrel, which does look like it could be original, or a period replacement. The barrel shows a lovely aged polished patina, while the brass fittings have a beautiful polished glow. The stock is in very nice shape, showing wear commensurate with age, but no repairs or major damage. We did notice however that the brass muzzle fitting is missing, along with the previously mentioned grip escutcheon. We checked the lock action, and it is fully functional, holding at half cock and firing at full.

A lovely 18th Century Spanish Dragoon pistol, ready to research and display!
