Original 19th Century British Flintlock Boxlock Vest Pistol by Brunton of York - circa 1821 - 1830

Regular price $995.00

Item Description

Original Item. Only One Available. This is a lovely iron framed "boxlock" style flintlock pocket pistol dating to approximately 1821-1830, and marked clearly on the lock with BRUNTON on the left and YORK on the right. English gunmakers: The Birmingham and Provincial Gun Trade in the 18th and 19th Century by De Witt Bailey and Douglas A Nie list Brunton as working 1817-1820 in Doncaster and 1821 to 1830 in York, both in Yorkshire County. We have seen several other examples by this same maker, mostly flintlock pistols of various sizes and types.

The weapon measures 5 " in overall length with a screw off 1 ½" smooth bored .48"cal iron cannon barrel, which in very good condition, showing signs of light to moderate use. Like most we see, the barrel joint is unfortunately seized, and probably has been for well over 100 years. The underside of the frame is also marked with the CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / BPC "proof" and CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / V "viewed" markings from the city of Birmingham, England, in use after 1813. The bottom of the barrel is also marked with the CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / V "viewed" mark.

The frame, action and barrel show a lovely lightly oxidized finish, with the original decorative engraving on the sides well preserved, and just a bit of light peppering in areas. There is line engraving around most parts, and there are also some small engraved decorations in areas, such as on the bottom of the trigger guard.

The end of the frame is fitted with a slab sided figured walnut grip in lovely display condition, with some great grain and a lovely finish. The lock functions correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full. There is a half-cock safety, which slides over the tumbler at half cock, preventing the pistol from being fully cocked, definitely a benefit with a pistol meant for a vest pocket. There is a screw missing on the front right of the action, just before the flash pan.

A great Flintlock pocket pistol, suitable for any Gentleman or Military Officer. Ready to display!
