Item Description
Original Item: Only one available. This is a very rare "Queen Anne" style pistol, with some fantastic decorative silver mountings. The butt cap has a lovely embossed silver grotesque mask, and there is a perforated silver side plate showing lovely foliate designs. There is even a lovely silver escutcheon on the back of the grip, which would often be personalized.
The pistol does not have any maker marks on it, but that is not uncommon for bespoke pieces such as this. There are markings on the bottom of the breech, which are unfortunately quite worn, but we think we can make out the CROWN / GP "gunmaker's proof" and CROWN / V "viewed" markings from the London Proof house. Between these is a CROWN / BC stamp, which may be a maker marking. The pistol has some line engraving on the percussion hammer, with some more intricate designs circling the breech of the barrel and on the barrel tang, though the barrel engraving is definitely worn.
The pistol measures 13 inches in overall length, with a 6 1/4 inch screw off cannon barrel, in the typical "Queen Anne" style, however the joint is seized, and probably has been for centuries. The pistol has an iron trigger guard, and there is no provision for a ramrod, not needed as it had a removable barrel. It was most likely converted to percussion at some point in the mid 19th century, and the attachment points for the frizzen, pan, and spring can still be seen. The dark English Walnut butt grip is lovely, and has some carving around the barrel tang, which shows a seashell design. There are some cracks on either side of the barrel tang, which do not look to have been repaired.
Condition is very nice, with a lovely worn patina of age. It does show signs of repeated cleanings over its long life, which have unfortunately made much of the original engraving work faint. The silver mountings are all still in great shape, and really add to the piece. The lock functions correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full, though it does take a strong trigger pull to fire.
A truly lovely "Queen Anne" percussion converted pistol in fine Collector's condition ready to display!
