Original Scottish Large Bore "Man Stopping" Flintlock Overcoat Pistol by Thomson of Edinburgh with Captured Ramrod - circa 1820

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a very nice Scottish flintlock overcoat pistol, with an impressive 0.66 inch "Man Stopping" bore. This definitely would have given the user quite a kick when fired. It is marked on the lock by maker THOMSON / EDINBURGH, and also marked MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY on the top of the barrel. We believe this to be John Thomson, who worked from 1816 - 1827 in Edinburgh. There were numerous other gunmakers with the last name Thomson working in Edinburgh, such as George, James, and Alexander, all of whom were also listed as "Gunmaker to his Majesty", so it is also possible that it was made by one of those. The style and appointments however suggest early 19th Century.

The pistol has a 5 inch long round smoothbore barrel, and an overall length of 9 1/2 inches. It has all brass mounts of trigger guard, side plate and nose cap, and is also fitted a very nice captured ramrod under the barrel. There is a copper sheet fitting around this area, but it is not original, and was used to repair and stabilize some cracks around the ramrod. The barrel bears a CROWN / GR / BROAD ARROW proof as well as a CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS proof marking for Pre-1813 manufacture in Birmingham, England. It was very common for gunmakers throughout England to purchase barrels out of the large gunmaking industry in the city. The lock is definitely an upmarket advanced design, featuring a bridle on the frizzen as well as a roller on the frizzen spring. The swan neck cock also features a working half cock sliding safety.

The Walnut wood stock is in very good shape with a lovely brown color, showing light wear, with the expected light denting from use. It does show some past repairs around the ramrod channel, stabilized by copper sheeting. The original captured ramrod is still present, and works beautifully. The lock is fully functional, holding at half cock and firing at full, and the safety is fully functional as well.

A real MAN STOPPER with a very large bore, this lovely overcoat pistol by Thomson is ready to display!
