Item Description
Original Item: One-of-a-kind. Here we have a very interesting piece of USGI Art, which looks to have been painted during the immediate post war / occupation period in Germany. Framed, it measures 25 ½" × 21 ½", with the canvas itself measuring 21 ¾" × 17 ¾". Close examination however shows that the canvas itself was made using part the central swas (hook cross) portion of a German WWII NSDAP flag, which can be seen on the reverse. The flag looks to have been made from cotton canvas or possibly rayon, and was tacked to an inner frame that has a German maker mark stamped on it. Unfortunately, we have not been able to accurately read the stamping. This was then set into the larger frame once it was painted. The painting is signed ST. M, 45/9, which we assume means it was painted in September of 1945.
A fantastic piece of WWII Memorabilia with lots of research potential.
