Original Item: One-of-a-kind. Recently acquired from a highly respected private collection, this WWII Officer Visor Cap is named to Admiral James W. Whitfield. Beyond originating from a respected collection which contained multiple named items with provenance, there is no provenance or paperwork offered with this hat. Based on the origin, quality, markings and other factors we believe this hat to be genuine.
Rear Admiral James Walter “Bulldog” Whitfield was a 1918 Graduate of the US Naval Academy and the Commanding Officer of two Attack Transports during WW2 in Operation Torch. Before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, then Captain Whitfield, was aboard the cruiser USS Chester at Pearl Harbor and endured the December 7th attack. When the USS Chester set sail from Pearl Harbor in February of 1942 Captain Whitfield left the ship to take command of the Attack Transport USS Harry Lee for Operation Torch, the invasion of North Africa. USS Harry Lee suffered damage during the operations and had a major engineering failure. After this occurred Captain Whitfield transferred to the USS Calvert where he served as her commanding officer for the remainder of the operation. Captain Whitfield remained in the Atlantic for the majority of World War II and was later promoted to Rear Admiral.
This is original U.S. WWII Admiral's visor cap in green is named to Admiral Whitfield. This rare model was constructed with a forest green gabardine cover and black cap band with wool topped leather visor with bullion oak leaf embroidery and an American eagle cap badge with a gold chinstrap. The leather sweatband is in good worn supple condition. The cap is in very good condition overall. The most notable aspect of these hat is the name embossed in white lettering into the sweatband that reads:
