Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a wonderful example of a rather rare item dating back to the First World War, hard bread. This type of “Reserve Ration” was introduced for use during WWI, but this is not where it originated. This 8 oz container is the long lost relative of the more well known hardtack of the Civil War. Hardtack is a simple type of dense biscuit or cracker made from flour, water, and sometimes salt. Hardtack is inexpensive and long-lasting. It is used for sustenance in the absence of perishable foods, commonly during long sea voyages, land migrations, and military campaigns. Along with salt pork, hardtack was a standard ration for many militaries and navies from the 17th through the early 20th centuries.

Hard bread, a food item similar to hardtack and crackers, was included in the field rations for soldiers from many countries who fought in World War I, including the American Expeditionary Forces.

This example is in wonderful condition with some very minor deformities in the tin. While it is still sealed, there is a noticeable bulge to the tin meaning that the contents are long expired. There is slight oxidation present but otherwise this is a rare, excellent example.

Comes more than ready for display.

Idiot Clause - the contents of this kit are pre-1918 manufacture and are NOT suitable for consumption. They are being sold as novelty collector pieces only.
