Item Description

Original Item: One-of-a-Kind. This was clearly for a guard dog at Hever Castle in Kent, probably one of the early crossings between the massive Old English Mastiff and the Old English Bulldog. These crossings had been done for years to produce suitable guard dogs, and eventually led to the development of the Bullmastiff breed. The animal that wore this was certainly intended to put fear into any adversary and impress castle guests as well. The collar measures 26 inches from the buckle to the last hole in the collar, so it would fit a dog with an 8 inch thick neck. There is a 5 ¾” long brass plaque marked with:

BRUTUS
HEVER CASTLE

The collar is in well used but very good condition, with the leather still being supple and the buckle still functional. There is some cracking in the leather, so unfortunately we cannot recommend that it be used as a collar anymore. The brass has a lovely patina from centuries of cleaning. Ready to research and display!
