Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Fantastic rare recruitment poster for the United States Marine Corps. Features the profile of a full-length image of a Marine in a dress uniform with a rifle on his shoulder patrolling the docks; behind him is a partial image of a battleship and a montage of buildings plus an American flag.

The image was originally created in 1916 by the artist Sidney H. Riesenberg for the U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting office. So most people assume this is a World War One poster, however, the battleships USS Texas and USS New York, one of which is illustrated in the background, had their lattice masts replaced with tripods during their 1925-1926 overhauls, and he biplanes overhead are stylized Vought O2U Corsairs, which entered US Navy service until 1927. This dates the poster to the inter-war period and it was redesigned circa 1939 prior to WWII.

The poster measures approximately 23 ¾" × 31 ½", and looks to have been trimmed down to fit in a frame at some point, so the borders are no longer present. Overall condition is very good with original fold lines and vibrant colors. An identical poster can be found in the Library of Congress at this link.

Overall condition is very good with original fold lines and vibrant colors, though the paper itself is definitely somewhat degraded due to age. There are some small pieces missing throughout.
