Original Item: Only One Available. This impressive helmet boasts a height of nearly 9 and a half inches, measured up to the tip of its spike. Its body is crafted from boiled leather and features a japanned metal visor and neck shield, both adorned with beautiful gilded brass trimmings. The helmet plate, which displays the distinctive cypher of Franz Joseph I, is attached to the helmet by means of two threaded posts. The body of the helmet is further enhanced by the addition of gilded brass spines that extend from the cruciform base on either side and at the back. The short, fluted spike that adorns the top of the helmet measures just over 3 inches in length. Unfortunately the flat brass chinscales are no longer present nor are the rosettes that held it in place. Finally, this remarkable helmet still retains its original leather liner, though in very worn condition it is still a rarity to find one still attached.
The black leather shell of this Austrian Gendarmerie Officer pickelhaube exhibits signs of wear and tear, as expected with an item of this age. However, the extent of the damage is not severe. The lacquered leather finish, on the other hand, is in excellent condition but does have some crazing present.
It is worth noting that due to the age of the pickelhaube, there is some level of leather shrinkage, which has caused some of the brass fittings to become slightly loose. This is a common occurrence with antique leather items.
Overall, this pickelhaube is in very nice condition, and any serious collector would be thrilled to add it to their collection. Its historical significance and excellent condition make it a valuable and sought-after item.
