Original German WWII USGI Berchtesgaden Bring Back AH Silver Serving Tray by Wellner with Notarized Letter of Provenance - 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment Veteran

Item Description

Original Item: Only One available. Silver, flatware and serving pieces that were specifically made for the residences of Adolf H were highly sought after by USGIs as bring back trophies. Many items were recovered at The Berghof and the Eagle’s Nest at Obersalzberg near Berchtesgaden. This platter is in fact one of the the rare and the most desirable of all AH's silver items. Every U.S. soldier wanted to bring home something of note. AH silver was a choice item. Unlike silver eating utensils that had many in a set, large serving pieces like this example numbered much fewer (and ere harder to transport). Many U.S. soldiers who where lucky enough to get a hold of AH's silver opted for the less cumbersome eating utensils. Many times only officers or soldiers with access to motor vehicles carried big pieces home.

This is a stunning example of a round silver serving tray from Adolf H's personal silver service, acquired near his Berchtesgaden by a USGI. It measures 15 3/4" in diameter overall, and 12 3/4" in diameter at the bottom of the rim. Next to the rim is an NSDAP Political Reichsadler with slightly spread wings perched on a wreathed "static" swas, with the initials A H flanking the wreath. The opposite side of the top is embossed with the maker's name Wellner over 50, right next to the rim. There are no markings that we were able to see on the reverse.

The tray weighs approximately 3lbs and is in fine condition, free of major dents, significant scratching or abrasion. The silver has not been recently cleaned and shows a pleasing degree of tarnish and patina in areas.

This tray came to us with a lovely signed, dated, and notarized affidavit from Ann L Bryan, stating:

My mother's first husband, Lieutenant, Robert Alfred Tanner Jr., of the 508 Parachute Infantry, was one of the American soldiers to enter the H****r's Eagle Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) in the Spring of 1945. He personally brought back this Silver Tray that he removed from the mountain house located near the southeast German town of Berchtesgaden at the end of World War Two.

Definitely some fantastic provenance and research potential with this piece. Ready to add to your collection!
