Original Item: Original U.S. WWII M1 81mm Display Mortar with Commando Base Plate complete with Subcaliber .22cal Trainer Device 3-F-8 set!
The M1 81mm mortar was the largest weapon in the arsenal of the U.S. WWII infantry battalion. It provided the battalion commander with a powerful and flexible indirect fire capability. Sometimes called "infantry artillery," or "hip pocket artillery," mortars were capable of quickly laying down heavy barrages. These could stop enemy attacks under the worst conditions. Able to fire at high angles, mortars could fire at targets in defilade, either under direction of a forward observer, or firing off map coordinates. In the WW2 Pacific campaigns, these weapons became an important part of the battalion's firepower, especially since they could be man-packed into positions that were inaccessible to artillery.
This offering is all fitted with the far smaller "Commando" base plate, which is easily carried on a belt, which drastically improved the portability of the mortar, at the expense of firing stability. Still, for front line highly mobile units, it was highly useful.
We offer genuine M1 81mm non-functional BATF approved display mortars as used by U.S. forces in WWII (however this is likely postwar manufactured).

In addition the barrel has been fitted with two cross pins to prevent use. These weapons, are most unusual for the collectors market, and have been stored in European Government Arsenals until their recent release, original data plate long ago removed and optical sight is not included.
The 1953 U.S. Sub-caliber mortar trainer Device 3-F-8 was designed for 60mm, 81mm and 4.2 Inch mortars. This example is in very good condition, we believe all parts function.
Included in the kit are the following original parts:
- Subcaliber barrel.
- 22 Reusable Steel Projectiles (3 spare) with some parts.
- 2 boxes of .22 bank launching cartridges. (we cannot guarantee functionality)
- Adapters for 60mm ,81mm, 4.2 Inch with tools.
- Original wood transit chest and data plate bearing serial number 435. Measures 31" x 10" x 4.
- Rare original manual.
- Cleaning kit with bore brush, cleaning rod, etc...
All you do is Install the kit in your mortar place a blank in the base of the projectile drop it down the sub caliber tube and POP off it goes like the real thing!
Complete kit, with mortar offered in great condition, these do not come around often. Ready to display and test fire!
