Original U.S. Vietnam War Era EOD Resin Grenade Training Recognition Aid in Wood Case - 26 ½" x 8" x 3 ¾"

Item Description

Original & Replica Items: Only One Set Available. This is a wonderful Vietnam War era EOD training recognition aid, filled with high quality resin replica grenade bodies, which look to have been made by the EOD. It measures 26 ½" x 8" x 3 ¾", and looks to originally have had a cover that slid in place in front, possibly made from wood or plexiglass, which is now missing. The grenades in the set are a mix of incendiary, smoke, chemical, and fragmentation grenades, and each have printed out labels attached to them. Due to their orientation, unfortunately the entire labels often cannot be read.

Even though they are replica items, they still resemble actual ordnance, though none have fuses installed.

Unloaded or dummy grenades, artillery shell casings, and similar devices, which are cut or drilled in an BATF-approved manner so that they cannot be used as ammunition components for destructive devices, are not considered NFA weapons. This example is in total compliance and is NOT AVAILABLE FOR EXPORT.

The grenades in this kit:
- GRENADE, HAND, FRAG, DELAY M33: The M33 fragmentation hand grenade is used to supplement small arms fire against the enemy in close combat. The grenade produces casualties by high velocity projection of fragments in a uniform distribution pattern. The grenade body is a 2.5-inch diameter steel sphere which is designed to burst into numerous fragments when detonated. The grenade body contains 6.5 ounces of high-explosive, Composition B. Each grenade is fitted with a fuze that initiates the explosive charge. The M33 grenade used the M213 fuze which is a pyrotechnic delay-detonating fuze. It will function the grenade 4 to 5 seconds after release of the safety lever. The body of the fuze contains a primer and a pyrotechnic delay column. Assembled to the body are a striker, striker spring, safety lever, safety pin, pull ring, and a detonator assembly. The M213 fuze is equipped with a steel safety pin and pull ring. The split end of the safety pin is either spread approximately 40 degrees or diamond-shaped to prevent accidental removal and arming during shipping and handling. The pull ring is provided to facilitate easy removal of the safety pin. The M33 grenade is the same as the M67 grenade except that it does not have a safety clip. Olive drab with yellow markings.

- GRENADE, HAND, FRAG, DELAY M67: The M67 grenade is a fragmentation hand grenade used by the United States military. The M67 is a further development of the M33 grenade, itself a replacement for the M26-series grenades used during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and the older Mk 2 "pineapple" grenade used since World War I. The M67 grenade has a spheroidal steel body that contains 6.5 oz (180 g) of composition B explosive. It uses the M213 pyrotechnic delay fuze. The M67 grenade weighs 14 oz (400 g) in total and has a safety clip to prevent the spoon on the grenade from being triggered in the event the safety pin is accidentally pulled. The safety pin prevents the safety lever, or "spoon" on the grenade from moving and releasing the spring-loaded striker which initiates the grenade's fuse assembly.

The M67 is typically known as a "baseball" grenade, because it is shaped like a ball that can be easily thrown. According to the FY2021 US Army Justification, the average cost of a single M67 grenade is around 45 US dollars.

The M67 can be thrown 30 to 35 meters (98 to 115 ft) by the average male soldier. Its fuse delays detonation between 4 and 5 seconds after the spoon is released. Steel fragments are formed by the grenade body fracturing and have an injury radius of 15 meters (49 ft) and a fatality radius of 5 meters (16 ft), though some fragments can travel as far as 250 meters (820 ft).

- GREN, HAND SMK WP M34: The M34 White Phosphorus Smoke Grenade or "Willie Pete" was a smoke / incendiary grenade manufactured by Rocky Mountain Arsenal from the late 1950s and used by U.S. forces during the Vietnam War and was also used during the First Gulf War. The M34 WP Grenade replaced the World War II M15 WP grenade. The M34 could be fired from a rifle grenade launcher using M2-series grenade launching adapters due to the groove around the tapered base, which allowed the adapter arms to grasp it. In contrast, the M15 could not be fired as a rifle grenade. The M34 had a segmented body to allow for a better hand grip and to identify it as a casualty-producing grenade, even though fragmentation was not its primary damage mechanism. The smooth-bodied M15 was sometimes assumed to be a burning-type smoke grenade, and this sometimes resulted in injuries.

- M18 SMOKE RED: The M18 Colored Smoke Grenade is a US Army grenade used as a ground-to-ground or ground-to-air signaling device, a target or landing zone marking device, or a screening device for unit maneuvering.

- AN-M14A1 INCEN TH3: The AN-M14A1 TH3 incendiary hand grenade is used to destroy equipment. It can damage, immobilize, or destroy vehicles, weapons systems, shelters, or munitions. The grenade may also be used to start fires in areas containing flammable materials.

- AN-M8 SMOKE HC: The AN-M8 HC Smoke Grenade designated as the Army/Navy Model 8 HC Smoke Grenade (AN-M8 Smoke HC) is a US military grenade used as a ground-to-ground obscuring or screening device or a ground-to-air signaling or target-marking device. The HC smoke of the M8 is more toxic than that of the M18 grenade. The fumes comprise an acidic smoke of zinc chloride (ZnCl2), which produces hydrochloric acid on contact with water.

- GRENADE, HAND, FRAG, IMPACT M68: This is a variant of the M67 fitted with the M217 impact fuze and a safety clip on the safety lever. This fuze has an electrical impact function which arms within 1 to 2 seconds and will detonate the grenade upon impact, and a back-up pyrotechnic delay function which will initiate the grenade after 3 to 7 seconds if the impact function fails. The M68 has the same specifications and markings as the M67 except it has a red-painted fuze and lever to indicate it has an impact fuze.

- CS-1 M25A2: This is the American CS1 ABC-M25A2, a bursting type riot control agent hand grenade and may be used to simulate casualty agents during training. The CS1 ABC-M25A2 has a powerful lachrymal effect and is irritating to the upper respiratory passages, causing coughing, difficulty in breathing and chest tightness. Heavy concentrations will cause nausea and vomiting. The onset of incapacitation is 15 to 30 seconds and duration from 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the dosage concentration. CS is more persistent and has a more severe reaction than CN.

A lovely set ready for further research and display.
