Original WWI Era Folk Art Soapstone Carved Miniature Warship "VITORIA" Matching Carved Slate & Soapstone Stand

Regular price $595.00

Item Description

Original Item: One-of-a-Kind. Here we have a great example of late 19th - early 20th century folk art! Measuring 23 1/4 inches long, this is a lovely carved soapstone warship, which looks to be a destroyer sized ship from the WWI era. It has cannon at the front and back, along with two funnels and various other parts you would expect to see on a ship. It is held on a lovely soapstone & slate stand, which measures 22 3/4" x 2 5/8", with feet and supports for the ship.

It is carved with the name VITORIA on both sides of the bow, which definitely leaves somewhat of a mystery as to what ship it actually refers to. There was a Spanish Ironclad named Vitoria, which later had the sailing masts removed. However being that she was made in 1860, the shape is not right. There was the British battleship, HMS Victoria, launched in 1887, and also a British destroyer, HMS Vittoria, launched in 1917, which of all bears the most resemblance to the carved ship. One has to remember that this piece of folk art may have been made without the ship on hand to serve as a reference, so it was only what the carver remembered.

Definitely a lovely piece that would enrich any WWI Era maritime collection. Ready to research and display!
