This is a very nice vintage Smith & Wesson Model 76 plug-fire replica submachine gun manufactured by the well-known Model Gun Corporation (MGC) of Japan, complete with its original magazine. This is only the second MGC M76 we have offered, and despite some age wear and repairs, it remains an excellent display example of one of MGC’s more unusual Vietnam-era replica firearms.

The condition is really very good, but there is wear with part of the front sight broken off. There are also a couple of small repairs in spots. There is a bit of surface oxidation from long storage. As required by Japanese law at the time, almost the entire body of the gun is non-magnetic, made of high quality plastic with a lovely faux parkerized finish. Only the magazine, the stock, and other key pressure bearing components are made from steel.

These are incredible replicas that are almost superior to a dummy gun made from an original Parts Kit, which generally is welded. One can cock the bolt with the charging handle, pull the trigger, and the bolt slams forward! Unlike a much more expensive dummy gun that has none, if any, moveable parts. On an MGC, everything works!

The replica comes with the original magazine. These work with replica "cartridges”, which have small caps "plugged" into the front of them, which are then detonated by the replica bolt. These were ejected like real spent cartridges, and could be reloaded with additional caps. There are unfortunately none of these included.

This example still bears the full markings, and is marked with MOD 76 079105 on the rear right receiver, which may be the model and serial number. It is also marked SMITH & WESSON on the left side, along with the full Model Gun Corporation information:

MODEL: SW/76
MG-BLK SMG-AUTO
MODELGUN CORP.
MADE IN JAPAN

There is also an MGC logo on the right side of the magazine well.

Other than that, this is a very nice replica and feels almost the same as the real thing! Great for reenactors and collectors alike.

The original Smith & Wesson Model 76 was developed during the Vietnam War period after the U.S. Navy sought a domestically produced 9mm submachine gun suitable for special operations use. Navy SEAL personnel had been using the Swedish Carl Gustaf m/45, commonly known as the “Swedish K,” but continued access to those guns became problematic during the war.

Smith & Wesson responded with the Model 76, developed as a rugged, compact 9mm submachine gun with selective-fire capability and simplified construction. The design entered production in the late 1960s and became closely associated with U.S. Navy and special operations use during the Vietnam era.

Although visually similar to the Swedish m/45, the Model 76 was produced as Smith & Wesson’s own design to meet the Navy’s requirements for reliability, simplicity, ease of maintenance, and rapid production. Smith & Wesson manufactured the Model 76 from 1967 through 1974.

The combination of the MGC Japan manufacture, full Smith & Wesson-style markings, MOD 76 / 079105 identification, original detachable magazine, functioning model-gun action, and convincing faux parkerized finish makes this a particularly attractive vintage plug-fire replica. The broken front sight, repaired areas, and light oxidation are the principal condition issues, while the replica remains an excellent display piece for a Vietnam-era or military model-gun collection.

All purchases are sent and need an adult signature which is required by UPS.
