This is a very good original U.S. Navy WWII Signal Pistol, Mark 5, manufactured by R.F. Sedgley, Inc. and dated 1944. The Mark 5 was a 10-gauge Navy signal pistol, not a 22mm weapon, and this example retains its U.S.N.-marked grips, complete firing pin, functional extractor/ejector assembly, and Sedgley markings. Comparable documented examples confirm the Mark 5 as a 10-gauge U.S. Navy flare pistol.

Sedgley made two signal pistols for the US Navy, for the Bureau of Ships they supplied the 10-gauge Mark 5 with a 22mm bore, and for the Merchant Marine, the Mark-IV as approved by the USCG. Each service had a differing standard flare, the BuShips was 10-gauge and for Merchant Marine the 37mm parachute type.

On the top strap of the barrel it reads:

SIGNAL PISTOL MARK 5 R.F. SEDGLEY, INC. 1944

The grips are marked USN on both sides, which is uncommon, as often the marking was removed when being sold out of Navy storage. The barrel, frame, and grip are all marked with model number 242692-A-2, each with a different suffix. The frame also has the "Circled S" Sedgley logo.

The pistol is functional and retains its complete firing pin, and we have tested it to see if it presents. The ejector is also present and functional. Overall very good condition with the frame of the pistol showing a layer of moderate wear. The lanyard loop has broken away long ago.

This example is particularly noteworthy for the combination of its 1944 R.F. Sedgley date, U.S.N.-marked grips, original 242692-A component-number family, circled-S Sedgley logo, functional firing mechanism, and correct 10-gauge Navy configuration. It is a strong representative example of the dedicated pyrotechnic signaling equipment carried aboard U.S. Navy vessels and survival craft during WWII.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-wwii-u-s-navy-10-gauge-sedgley-mark-5-signal-flare-pistol-dated-1961
