Original WWII U.S. Army Air Corps - Forces Instrument Lot - Type D-12 Compass, K-11 Compensating Sight & Range Indicator

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a very nice lot of WWII instruments, as used by the U.S. Army Air Corps and later Army Air Force. These were purchased as a group, and we felt it best to keep them together.

The first item is a liquid-filled TYPE D-12 compass by BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION., complete with the steel cover. It still has a fully legible data plate indicating a 1941 contract date for the Army Air Corps, and there are also still the original installation and inspection tags from when it was installed into an airplane. The cover was later repainted and marked with the Army Air Forces logo. The compass still has liquid inside, but the card does not rest level.

The second item is a K-11 COMPENSATING SIGHT by SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO, INC., which also has an Air Corps contract number. This sight was designed to be used in B-24 Heavy Bombers by the nose gunner, and is marked as so. This was a wartime innovation that used the aircraft’s altitude and speed with the direct correlation of where the weapon was pointed to calculate the reticle. The aircraft altitude and speed was programmed into the dial shown on the rear of the sight. The correlation was determined by drive lines that connected the K-11 Sight to the turret.

The last item is actually a U.S. Navy item, a handheld A.A. RANGE INDICATOR. This would allow the range to an aircraft to be determined by holding it 24 inches from the viewer, if the wingspan was known. We assume this was "acquired" and not standard equipment, but we can definitely see how it would be useful.

A very nice WWII Aviation Instrument lot, ready to research and display!
