Only One Available. This is a very good service worn Imperial Japanese Navy tropical forage cap associated with the Special Naval Landing Forces, or SNLF. Constructed from lightweight cotton for warm weather use, it retains its yellow embroidered naval anchor insignia, black insignia backing, decorative front chinstrap, rear lace adjustment, ventilation eyelets, and a partially legible interior depot cartouche dated Shōwa 19, corresponding to 1944.

The cap is made from lightweight cotton suited to service in tropical and subtropical climates. Its soft construction and adjustable rear closure provided a practical alternative to heavier naval headgear during field operations.

The front bears a yellow embroidered naval anchor mounted on a black cloth backing. The insignia remains clearly visible and provides the principal association with Imperial Japanese naval service.

A decorative chinstrap extends across the front of the cap. Each side has three ventilation eyelets, providing a total of six. The rear is fitted with the characteristic four-eyelet lace closure. This arrangement allowed the size and fit to be adjusted by tightening or loosening the cord. There is some scattered staining in spots across the cap with the most on the crown.

The interior crown retains a worn depot or issue cartouche. Although portions are difficult to read, the date characters are visible as 十 九 年. These characters indicate Shōwa 19, corresponding to 1944. The cap appears to be approximately 57cm. No wearer’s name or clearly legible unit marking has been identified.

Before the establishment of permanent Special Naval Landing Force formations, the Imperial Japanese Navy assembled temporary landing parties from ships’ crews. These sailors received basic infantry instruction and could be deployed ashore for limited operations, security duties, or amphibious landings.

During the late 1920s, the Navy began organizing standing Special Naval Landing Force units. These formations were raised principally at the major naval districts of Kure, Maizuru, Sasebo, and Yokosuka and took their names from those bases.

SNLF formations served in China during the 1930s and later participated in amphibious and ground operations throughout Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Their duties included assault landings, port and airfield seizures, garrison service, reconnaissance, and the defense of isolated island positions.

Several Yokosuka SNLF units were converted for airborne operations and took part in Japanese parachute assaults in the Netherlands East Indies. These specialized formations remained part of the Imperial Japanese Navy and were separate from the Imperial Japanese Army’s airborne forces.

The cap’s lightweight cotton construction, embroidered anchor, rear lace closure, ventilation eyelets, and 1944 cartouche are consistent with Japanese naval tropical field headgear from the final years of WWII. Its service wear and faded interior markings reflect actual use, while the retained insignia and complete construction make it a strong representative example of late-war Imperial Japanese naval clothing.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-wwii-japanese-special-naval-landing-forces-cotton-forage-cap-dated-1944-snlf-3
