The sailor is wearing the standard Tellermütze \"Donald Duck\" cap, with a \u003cem\u003eReichsadler\u003c\/em\u003e on the crown over a cockade, and a cap tally that reads: \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMarineunteroffizierlehrabteilung\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e, or \"Navy Under Officer Training Dept\". Unteroffizier is the standard German term for Non-commissioned officers equivalent to U.S. Navy Petty and Warrant officers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe plaque is most likely to commemorate a specific class, in this case \"Sturm 11\", which completed their training in 1937. There were most likely many such plaques hung up at the training location. It is in good condition, with a crack in the wooden backing, and the bust has had the plating wear away in many areas, so it doesn't look nearly as impressive as it did when it was new. We looked, but unfortunately have not been able to find any further information on the plaque, and leave it as an excellent research opportunity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe wooden base measures approximately 9”H x 6 3\/4”W x 1”.
