This is a nice example of a wartime production production 2nd Model Luftwaffe dagger, with a Nickel-plated blade. It is a fine Solingen-Produced example made by Solinger Metalwaren-Fabrik Stöcker & Co. The celluloid grip of this 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger is a lovely caramel orange color, due to the fading of the celluloid covering. It remains in very good condition throughout with some scuffing and is tightly wrapped aluminum bullion bound twisted wire.

The hilt mounts are great on this dagger. The crossguard is made of Aluminum, which was an "Air Age" material, which was used to make most airplanes. It was considered fitting and desirable for the eagle-shaped guard to be made of this material. The front side is an eagle with a breast and talon area that is vaulted out much more so than the crossguards seen on other types of daggers. This guard shows little wear and has excellent feathering on the eagle. The bird, of course, flies to the left and grasps a mobile swas in his talons. The reverse panel is decorated with small pebbling and still has a portion of the original factory blackening. There looks to be some initials scratched in, but we cannot read them. The ferrule looks to plated steel, and has a lovely oxidized patina.

The aluminum pommel is crisp quite nice, with a lovely antiqued finish in the recesses of the design. The swas on both sides are bold, still showing most of the gold highlighting, and the oak leaves around it is raised out and heavily hand enhanced.

The blade on this example is not nickel plated, which is common for the 2nd model dagger blades. It still shows some of the factory final grind cross grain, but it is somewhat faint. There are also a lot of small stains on both sides of the blade, and signs of cleaning to remove oxidation in the past, as well as scuffing and runner wear.

This example was produced by Solinger Metalwaren-Fabrik Stöcker & Co. GmbH, also known as SMF, who were one of the major producers of this knife during WWII. Their "Seated King" over SMF / SOLINGEN trademark is seen on the reverse base of the blade. They were one of the major suppliers of edged weapons to the Luftwaffe during WWII. As the name implies, they were located in Solingen, the legendary "City of Blades" in Western Germany. The aluminum bands are well defined and have outstanding hand enhanced oak leaves tipped at a 45 degree angle. The throat is retained by flush screws on either side.

This a nice 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger by SMG, offered in very nice condition, ready to display!

Specifications:
Blade Length: 10"
Overall length: 15 1/2”
Crossguard: 3 1/4”
Scabbard Length: 11 3/4”

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-wwii-german-early-2nd-model-luftwaffe-dagger-by-smf-with-nickel-plated-blade
